Mission: Delta Quadrant Transition
Location: Security/Sharpe's Quarters/Captain's Ready Room
Timeline: Current

After returning to his office after speaking with the new First Officer his computer bleeped, curiously he walked over to his desk and sat and pulled up the message.

To: Lieutenant Paul Sharpe CoS USS Lantau
From: Office of the CinC Starfleet Security - Sol Sector Earth

Lieutenant Sharpe

It is with sadness that we have to inform you that your aunt and uncle died in an unfortunate accident while climbing in their home town. At the request of your other family members, you are hereby granted leave from active duties on the USS Lantau, the length of leave not set, this takes effect immediately, pack up your stuff Mr Sharpe, you will not be returning before the Lantau leaves for the Delta Quadrant.

We would like to offer our condolences on your loss as we know your Aunt and Uncle were effectively the ones who brought you up, come on home Lieutenant Sharpe your family needs you.

Regards and Sympathies

Lieutenant Commander Jennifer Lang [NPC: Sharpe]
Aide to CinC Starfleet Security
Sol - Sector - Earth

Sharpe had been leaning forward to read this and now deflated he sat back wiping a tear from his eye, it was here that his limited Vulcan training kicked in and he held the emotions back as there would be plenty of time to mourn. With emotions now under control he set things in motion, he had the cargo he brought aboard removed and shipped back home, minus one crate of single malt scotch 2230 vintage, there were twelve bottles in the crate, it was one of four crates that came aboard and was hard to obtain. He put the items details on a separate Padd and with that in hand he made his way to his quarters to pack his carry on belongings.

It took two hours and within those two hours the cargo crew had come to take off the stuff he could not carry, this left him with the carry one bags he had with him when he arrived. He put on another Padd his Ship Security codes and cleared all his private files of the system, leaving only official ones he had made on it, then with two Padds in hand he exits his quarters and heads up to the Captain's Ready Room via the route that bypassed the bridge, all ships had such a corridor.

Approaching the doors of the Captain's Ready Room, Sharpe pressed the buzzer and waited for the response.

- Captain's Ready Room -

Evelynn Haught sat behind her desk in her ready room looking over the departmental readiness reports. She had just started reading the Sickbay readiness report when her door chime sounded.

"Enter." she said calling out.

Lieutenant Sharpe entered the Captain's Ready Room and came to attention, he mentally prepared what he was going to say in his head "might I have a moment of your time Captain?" Sharpe asked.

"Have a seat lieutenant, what's on your mind?" Evelynn asked as she offered a chair.

Nodding his thanks and taking a seat, "I have had me some bad news from home Captain, as you probably know I lost my parents when I was young and my aunt and uncle brought me up. I have just had me a note from the office of CinC Starfleet Security, letting me know both my, for want of a better word adoptive parents have died and while they are granting me leave, they are not my Commanding Officer, you are" He said showing the Captain a Copy of the letter on one of the Padds he had brought with him.

Evelynn took the padd and read the letter that was sent to her Security Chief. "I am sorry about your loss Lieutenant. You have deepest sympathies and you are correct in that the Security CinC isn't your commanding officer. I don't know why they would grant you leave without informing me ahead of time."

*shrugs at her response as he did not know how to properly respond to it and continued* "In light of this personal loss Captain and I know we have not had sufficient time to work together, but I am also here to resign my position of Chief of Security on the Lantau and to step away, as in I will be unable to journey into the Delta Quadrant with you, here is my official notice of my resignation" he added handing a smaller Padd to her, he still had two Padds remaining.

Evelynn sat back in her chair as she sat the padd down without looking at it. "Is there a specific reason why you aren't coming with us, besides your adoptive parents passing?"

He thought a moment "It will take me about three weeks to get to earth, then I will have to remain to sort things out, I estimate about two weeks, then there will be visits to the Counsellor, just to make sure I am mentally fit. In all that time on earth the Lantau is due to leave in the middle of all that, so I figure it is easier for me to step down now, so as you can have a new CoS in place for when you go into the Delta Quadrant" Sharpe said placing two remaining Padds on his lap.

"I see. Well, Lieutenant, it's been a pleasure to have you on board and I wish you the best and of course accept our deepest sympathies in your loss." Evelynn stood up and walked over to where Lt. Sharpe was. "Lieutenant, you are hereby relieved of your duties and position here aboard the Lantau."

Nodding as he also stood up, then remembered something, "Oh Captain two things remaining" he said indicating two remaining Padds left in his hand but not yet offering them to the Captain.

"Yes?" she asked wondering what else would be remaining. She knew she was going to be losing a good officer but she also knew what he was going through and the decisions behind making them.

Sharpe held the first Padd up "This Padd Captain is a personal security precaution from me to you, the XO has one also, what this is, is a one time one use master code, if a hostile species manage to lock your command codes out under a lock of their own design, then this code has an algorithm that can adapt to most alien computer viruses. If such a thing happens then use that and it should unlock your standard security clearances allowing you to regain control and lock out the enemy" Sharpe said handing the Padd over and adjusting his grip on the remaining Padd.

Evelynn looked over the padd she had been given. "This impressive. I don't think I have ever heard of something quite like this before. Thank you." she eyed the other padd but didn't want to push the lieutenant until he was ready. "Anything else?" she asked.

"It took me three years to write that code and make it adaptive to most alien computer hacks, temporality" he said then noted to where she was looking "Ah yes!" *holds up the Padd* "This has the crate number of a twelve item crate I have left for you in Cargo Bay two. *pause* You see Captain, Computer skills and code creating is one of my more time consuming skills and finding back doors into foreign computers, temporally rewiring a tactical console to give Phasers or defensive systems more power, I also have me another talent, I have contacts that can get items that are rarely seen in today's Starfleet" *pauses as he hands over the Padd.*

"That Padd Captain is encoded to your codes and the crate I left you as a parting gift is where I said, I hope you are fond of single malt scotch 2230 vintage? Because there are twelve bottles in a crate in Cargo Bay two for you, all other alcoholic beverages have been removed from the Lantau, but I could not leave without leaving a parting gift" Sharpe said, knowing his meeting was coming to the end he had one thing remaining to do to make things official.

"Thank you. I don't believe I've ever received such a gift like this before." Evelynn said.

*Smiling* "no problem Captain" *pauses* "before I go captain, I wish to pay forward something that was said to me a long time ago" he paused as he headed to the door and stopped in range of its sensors, thus keeping it open.

"May the Gods always stand between you and harm in all the empty places you must walk, this was said to me the day I got my first posting as an Ensign, so now considering where you are going I think it apt" Sharpe said.

Evelynn stood up and walked out and stood in front of Paul Sharpe. "And may they walk with you in your time of sorrow."

Sharpe smiled at her response, "farewell Captain" Sharpe said and passed through the doorway allowing the doors to close, he had to return to his quarters to pack his personals and to make sure everything that was his was packed away.
