The Dead Zone

Posted on Sat Sep 30, 2017 @ 11:54pm by Lieutenant Commander Finchley Kerr & Captain Evelynn Haught & Lieutenant Debbie Larson & Lieutenant MuRiel & Lieutenant JG Andrew Mial & Lieutenant JG Johnny Walker & Lieutenant JG Freeda Howards

Mission: Vivere aut non vivere ...
Location: Conference Lounge, Deck 1
Timeline: Current.

Kevin came away from the briefing he'd just had with the Captain with trepidations, he really felt that this was going to be a tough mission. He entered the Conference lounge and headed up to the top end of the table. Normally, he'd have taken his usual seat to the right hand side of the chair where the Captain would sit, but, having just met with the CO and been asked to 'give' the briefing instead, he slowly sat in the chair at the head of the table.

Clearing his throat he tapped his COMM badge and said "Commander Kilbane to all Senior staff, please make you're way immediately to the Conference Lounge, Kilbane out."

Andrew listened to the XO's message came through the comm system and sent the following, =^=Lieutenant Mial for Commander Kilbane On my way Commander be there in a minutes Sir.=^=

The first to enter was MuRiel's shiny mech, as piloted by Starfleet's tiniest officer. The unit moved to an empty seat, choosing to move the chair out of the way before the cockpit opened and the Qwi took her seat on the shoulder of her mech.

A little later Debbie walked through the doors and headed for a seat. "I apologise my my appearance sir, your message caught me at a bad time." She said as she sat down, her uniform and her hands were grubby though she had tried to wipe some of it off as she walked to the conference room.

Kevin watched as the Chief Engineer came in, talking to him as they moved towards their seat. "No need to apologise Chief, I understand" he replied.

Freeda hated to miss a Senior staff meeting but surgeries took priority. "Howards to Commander Kilbane." she said through the ships comments syatem. "I will be unable to attend the meeting as I am in the middle of surgery to repair Ensign Harper's leg. She was rock climbing and missed a foot hold and fell and fractured it in about ten places. But don't worry I will be monitoring the meeting from in the surgical bay."

"Understood Lieutenant Howards, thank you for letting me know" Kevin answered.

As the XO was about to start the meeting with the department heads Lieutenant Mial walked in and said "My apologies Commander for my Tardiness but I was running the team through one last training simulation and wanted to see it through to its end."

Turning to the Chief Security Officer Kevin said "Again, no need for the apology Lieutenant, how's the Security team shaping up?"

"My mother told me manners are never overrated Sir. The team is forming nicely. They shall be a lean mean fighting machine, Starfleet likes to put it's best on the new ships so physically they are excellent it is just working out the best groupings. My predecessor and you too Commander have given me a great team." Andrew said to Commander Kilbane.

"You'll have a new Assistant Chief of Security joining you shortly, they're transferring over from Iota Station" Kevin said "I used to work with them when I was in Security on the USS Frannery, the USS Victory and also in Intelligence, it's an officer called Shr'Nesh Karadis. Don't worry about the fact that their rank is Lieutenant Junior Grade as well, they've recently been promoted from being an NCO into the Officer ranks, but they've been promoted quickly already. They're extremely experienced, very reliable, and I can recommend that if you ever need a second opinion or advice on something Security or Intelligence related, they'll happily give you their impartial thoughts and advise you well" he finished.

"Any advice is always useful. Having officers with NCO experience, especially with both security and intelligence experience will come in very handy in the Delta quadrant I believe." Andrew said with a smile.

"That's very true" Kevin replied.

Knowing that time was of the essence, he decided to forego waiting on the Chief Counsellor to come in and started off the briefing. He'd have words with her afterwards about reliance on showing up to briefings on time. He was a stickler for formality and being punctual when needing to be at a briefing. if he was able to show up on time, unless a Senior staff member had an extremely good reason not to be, they should be able to be there shorthly after being asked as well.

Walker entered the lounge, looking down at the floor. Looking up, "My apologies, everyone. I have no excuse for my tardiness."

"Being on time would be appreciated Lt Walker" Kevin replied "please take a seat and we can begin.

"Yes, sir, understood." Johnny said as he sat down.

"The Captain has asked me to give you our mission briefing" Kevin began, "Iota Station has recently been receiving unusual codes from an area here in the Delta Quadrant that's been dubbed 'The Dead Zone'. The reason it's been dubbed this is because despite our best efforts, the Federation station has been unable to, as yet, scan the area to map it. The staff on the station have been trying to break the codes to find out what the messages are, but have been unable to do so. They've sent out regular probes to try and determine where the codes have originated from, but station hasn't received any telemetry or readings at all from any of them. Finally, they sent in the USS Clip in to see if 'they' could gather any information and uncover where the messages came from, but it's believed something's happened to the ship as the last message received from them was..." and he reached forward to the PADD on the table in front of him and pressed a button "...Clip...W..ve...con...Borg. Re...ip...enc.." and Kevin cliced the off button "then their transmission ended" he concluded.

He say back for a moment and looked round the table at the Senior Staff assembled before continuing "Starfleet has assigned us to go into 'The Dead Zone' on a duel mission, to find out why the USS Clip stopped transmitting and disappeared, and also determine where the codes are being sent from and if possible, why. I know this is a new ship to us all, and we're still trying to work out it's kinks and problems, but we'll just have to do it as we go, there's nothing else for it."

Again, he looked around the table "Questions or comments ladies and gentlemen?"

Lieutenant Mial was the first to open up the comments, "Commander Kilbane, not that I rely on guess work, but as you know much of Security work is based heavily on deduction which at first, until there is some proof is all guess work, It seems USS Clip has at least had contact with the Borg, I expect that means they have now either been killed defending themselves or been assimilated and are now part of the collective."

"It's true" Kevin began his reply "that it would appear that the USS Clip came into contact with the Borg, however, we can't make any assumptions after that Lieutenant Mial. For all we know, the USS Clip may have engaged the Borg, taken heavy damage including damage to their long range communications, but were able to escape and are currently hiding out somewhere making repairs so they can make an attempt to get back to Iota Station again, we just don't know. All we are certain of is that the USS Clip didn't return, so we've been tasked to find out why" he finished.

There didn't appear to be any other questions from any of the other Senior staff officers, so Kevin said "We don't have a lot of information to go on, and it goes without saying that there's a very good chance of us coming up against the Borg and none of us relish it, however, we have a job to do, and we need to do it well.

Lieutenant Mial, continue your drills with the Security teams, run contingency holodeck programs with them just in case we're boarded by the Borg" he said.

"Yes Commander, we'll be ready for anything that comes, So long as Engineering can guarantee it working without the normal glitches." Andrew Mial said to Commander Kilbane.

Turning to the Chief Engineer Kevin said "Lieutenant Larson, continue checking the new systems, especially the ablative hull armour, I want to be absolutely sure it'll withstand an initial attack from any Borg vessel, also see if you can boost our own phasers, and if you have a trick or two up your sleave, don't hesitate to let me know."

"I will see what I can think of Commander." Debbie said. Internally she laughed a little, engineers were always expected to pull miracles from out of nowhere.

"Lieutenant Muriel, I'd like you and Ensign Tang to have a look at the message sent back to Iota Station by the USS Clip, see if you can use some kind of algorithm to clean it up. Report anything you get directly to me please, the CO will have enough on their plate as it is" Kevin said to the Chief Scientist.

"Yes Sir." replied a small, sqeaky voice. "I'll need a copy of the message. Well get on it as soon as we have it."

"I'll make sure you have a copy" Kevin replied.

Turning to the Chief Intelligence officer next he said "Lt Walker, get a hold of all the telemetry sent back by the probes Iota Station sent out, try to find out if there's something they all had in common before they stopped transmitting, sub-space anomalies, any kind of interference or comets....anything that might give us a hint."

He tapped his COMM badge and said "Lieutenant Howards, please ensure all medical supplies are well stocked, if we do encounter the Borg, there could be a few casualties."

Lt. Howards finished with the surgery. "I will start my research Commander and make sure that all Medical kits and supplies are fully stocked in case we encounter something." she hoped that wouldn't be the case but you never know with the Borg.

He looked at the assembled staff as a whole. We get underway in an hour people, let's make sure we're as ready as we can be, dismissed."

'Time to see about pulling some miracles from my backside' Debbie thought to herself as she stood and left the briefing room.

With that, Starfleet's littlest officer elegantly got back into her seat and piloted her encounter unit out of the briefing room, mind already racing no *-
various algorithms for cleaning up that message.

Though new to the Lantau crew, Kevin liked to think that he was a reasonably quick study of peoples personalities. He'd been around the block a few times during his time in Starfleet and met many characters and learned who to trust and who to watch out for. He'd learned to trust his instincts and his instincts warned him that he needed to watch the Chief Engineer because they seemed the kind of hot head type who'd think, or actually say, smart alec comments simply because they'd been tasked, or called, to do something outwith what they were possibly comfortable with. Yes, he'd be watching them like a hawk and if they stepped out of line, even once, he'd come down on them like a ton of bricks because he didn't suffer fools, not even for one single second.
