Vivere aut non vivere ...
Location: XO's office
Kevin sat in his office pouring over reports that had 'come across his desk', so say, though in reality they'd come to him on his console. Deep in thought as he was reading a Security brief, he became aware of another presence. He didn't look up because he had no need to, the presence was a not unfamiliar one, a ghost from his past.
"What do you need Sylvian?" he asked out loud.
"You're getting better" a voice replied "that only took you twelve seconds."
"Well, you know what happens when you stop practicing things, the senses become a little dulled" Kevin answered, finally looking up.
The man standing leaning against the doorway gave a short snort of laughter "It's what happens when you shine a seat with your backside Kevin, you know that!"
"Why don't you just come out with it, what do you want?" Kevin asked again, sounding slightly impatient.
"I don't want anything" Sylvian answered "I came here to give you a present."
"I find it highly unlikely you don't want anything, and as for your present, you can shove it right up your ar..." Kevin began to reply, but Sylvian interrupted him.
"Seriously.....you still haven't forgiven me for Joras Prime, have you?" Sylvian said.
"No I haven't!" Kevin retorted.
"It was a 'kindness', well, of sorts" Sylvian replied.
"YOU SHOT ME!" Kevin shouted.
"At least I said to you I was giving you a kindness to remember me by" Sylvian said.
"YOU...SHOT...ME!!!" Kevin reiterated
"Yes, but I deliberately didn't hit and vital organs and it saved your skin, the Jorasian Militia thought you were dead so left you where you fell" Sylvian said.
"I nearly died you arrogant bastard!" Kevin nearly shouted.
"But Karadis found you and got you back to the shuttle and then to the ship where you had surgery from the doctor on board" Sylvian said.
Then another voice joined the conversation "And you never really thanked me for saving your worthless hide..."
Kevin's stare went to the doorway of his office, and there standing in the frame was Shr'Nesh Karadis "But you can do so now if you want....Sir" she added, smiling at Kevin.
"Karadis!" Kevin exclaimed delightedly at seeing his old friend.
"This is the present I was telling you about" Sylvian said.
Kevin turned back to say something in reply to him, but then his head whipped back round again to Karadis "Wait a minute, Karadis, you're wearing slate grey....that's the Intelligence departments colou.....no, oh God no, please tell me you haven't left Security to go back to being in Intelligence again???"
"What can I say Sir, Sylvian said I was needed, and you know the old Intel saying "Once in....in for life", and here I am" Karadis replied.
"But you were going to be Security Assistant Chief" Kevin answered exasperatedly.
"And now she's going to be Intelligence Assistant Chief" Sylvian chided in.
"I'll get to you in a minute" Kevin said, pointing his finger, but not looking at, Sylvian.
Then it suddenly struck Kevin.
"Here it comes..." Sylvian said with a smirk on his face.
Kevin suddenly looked at Sylvian and said "How in the hell did you two manage to get on board this ship without anyone knowing and without tripping any alarms?"
"Oh Kevin, there's not a Starfleet vessel designed and constructed yet that we can't get on board undetected" Sylvian said "you ought to know that, I taught you how to!"
"But this is a Century Class, brand new, just out of the wrapper, it's meant to have the most up to date Security system in the fleet!" Kevin said.
"Ah yes, but, you're still ironing out the flaws aren't you" Sylvian winked.
"Right, I'm going to have a bloody word with Security and Engineering about this!!!" Kevin said, his face going purple.
"Well, I'd love to stick around so I could listen to you bellow at these people, but, I must be going" Sylvian said.
Kevin was about to say something when Sylvian held up his hand and pressed a button on his wrist. As he began to de-materialise he waved goodbye to Kevin and said "Tell Karadis......", and he was gone.
Turning to his friend he sarcastically said "Oh this is just 'Dandy', now I have to explain it to the Captain, and she's going to loooooooove this...."
Karadis just smiled and said "Aye spy."
